Principles of Experimental Design for the Life Sciences
Published in Hardcover by CRC Press (23 May, 1996)
Author: Murray R. Selwyn
Average review score:

A wonderful Guide for Designing Research Studies
This slim volume offers a great overview for how to design experimental research studies for the life sciences. It is relatively light on mathmatical formulas, but emphasizes the rational step by step approach one needs to take to plan out a study that will avoid the pitfalls of experimental design (or lack thereof) that can spell disaster for the researcher. The writing is understandable and straight forward. A number of practical examples are presented throughout the book which facilitate an understanding of the concepts presented. One key area which I especially appreciated was Selwyn's discusion of Power from the standpoint of sample size and how this can influence the selection of a particular experimental design.

In summary, this is an excellent text for classes which study scientific methods and design in the life sciences, and a good companion for a standard statistics text book. It is also great for investigators who want to conduct their research in a scientifically sound and efficient manner.

Pronouncing Bible Names
Published in Hardcover by Holman Bible Pub (July, 1983)
Authors: W. Murray Severance and W. Murray Senerance
Average review score:

Having trouble with Bible Names????
This is not a story book, but rather a key to pronouncing the
names. They are the word with the appropriate pronounciation marks (some bibles have these, but not many), then a phoenetic spelling as it sounds. There are diversities of translations and distinctives of versions. This includes King James, New Amrican Standard, New International, Revised Standard and Today's English. It is particularly great for those who have been poor readers, but are hungry for the Word and are teaching Sunday School classes, Bible studies or are called on to read aloud sections of scripture in class. It is a wonderful tool.

Puget's Sound: A Narrative of Early Tacoma and the Southern Sound
Published in Hardcover by University of Washington Press (October, 1981)
Author: Murray Cromwell Morgan
Average review score:

Breathes new life into a dull city
It's unlikely this book will be of much interest to anyone not living in the Tacoma area. Just the same, it is a colorful portrait of the city that used to be, the dreamers and scheamers who came so close to creating the west coast's hub city from scratch. The story of Tacoma's rapid rise to prominence, and its equally swift and steady decline is not only facinating, it delivers a valuable lesson on what still happens today when civic cheerleaders go blind with optimism.

This book is a must-read if you want to amuse and/or bore your fellow Tacomans with antecdotes on street names, unusual buildings, et cetera. Perfect fodder for Tacoma's burgeoning barstool-pundit culture.

Purgatory
Published in Paperback by Tor Books (February, 1994)
Authors: Russell Murray and Mike Resnick
Average review score:

I wonder why this book isn't more well known
I read this book mostly because I am interested in the integration of human's into an alien race. What I found though left me speechless. Resnick turns a human battle for profits into an alien battle for survival and supremacy of their home world. Potent symbolism and intricate character development, and an ending that will stagger you with tragedy. One of your best and most meaningful books Mike. Why doesn't anyone know about it?

Pursuing a Dream to Fly is a very good book!
I read the manuscript and greatly enjoyed the experience of learning what it takes to get a private pilots license. Bob Murray made his journey both interesting and informative. This book is a must read for anyone wanting to know what it takes to become a pilot.

The Quotable Nature Lover : A Nature Conservancy Book
Published in Hardcover by The Lyons Press (November, 1999)
Author: John Murray
Average review score:

A Book for a Lifetime!
This book is truely excellent. It is divided into catagories from community to place to stewardship, with quotations from well, and less well, known naturalists and other people like Thoreau, Emerson, Jane Goodall, Aldo Leopold, John Muir, Wendell Berry, Wallace Stegner, David Brower, Margaret Mead, Rachel Carson, Willa Cather, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt, Darwin, Skakespeare, and so many more. There is an index, so you can look someone's name up and find quotations made by them. There is also a section called "Selected Biographies," which has short biographies of some of the people who wrote the quotations in this book. It is truely a pleasure to read, inspirational, and provides plenty of food for thought. A great book for "anyone who loves nature - birders, hikers, fisherman, gardeners, backpackers, adventurers..."

The Quotable Osler
Published in Hardcover by American College of Physicians (01 December, 2002)
Authors: William Osler, Mark E. Silverman, T. J. Murray, Charles S. Bryan, and Th S. Harding
Average review score:

A must for "Osler Lovers"
I know three of the medical doctors (All members of the Osler Society) who assembled these choice selections uttered and (mostly) penned by Sir William Osler . . who seems to have felt strongly on only one controversial subject = that men seldom did any worthwhile creative work after age 40 and would do well to be "chloroformed" at age 60. Sir William died at age 70. The term "Internal Medicine" was coined in German-speaking Europe during Sir William's post-graduate training years there and he established the definition of the "specialty" at Johns Hopkins. The "specialty" has now out-lived its usefulness but our reverence for the man who contributed more than any other to the art and science of patient care obviously is being passed along to many young men and women who choose to be REAL PHYSICIANS.
